Journaling Screenshots vs. Journaling Numbers: What Each One Actually Proves

Two traders can both say they journal every trade and mean completely different things by it. One has a folder of chart screenshots with arrows drawn on them and a caption underneath. The other has a spreadsheet row with an entry price, a stop distance, a position size and a result. Both feel like discipline. Only one of them can actually tell you what happened to your account.

What a screenshot proves

A screenshot captures the chart at a moment — the pattern, the level, the context that made the setup look worth taking. That is genuinely useful for the thing it is good at: recognising whether a setup you traded before looks like a setup in front of you now. Pattern recognition is visual, and a screenshot is the only record that preserves it.

What it does not capture, no matter how good the annotation, is what the trade actually cost if it went wrong or what it actually returned if it went right relative to that risk. A screenshot with an arrow pointing at a clean breakout looks identical whether the trade behind it was sized at 0.5% risk or 5% risk. The chart doesn't know, and neither does anyone reviewing it later.

What a number proves

A logged entry, stop and size proves the opposite thing: exactly how much was risked, exactly what came back, and — over enough trades — whether the process behind those numbers has a positive expectancy. It is the only version of a journal that can actually answer “is this working” with anything more than a feeling.

What it strips out is the reason the trade looked good in the first place. A row that reads “EURUSD, short, −0.8R” is honest and precise, and it tells you nothing about whether the setup itself was sound or whether it was a coin flip that happened to land the wrong way. Numbers alone can tell you a strategy is losing; they can't always tell you why, because the visual context that produced the entry decision isn't in the row.

Where screenshot-only journals actually fail

The specific failure mode is not that screenshots are useless — it is that a screenshot-only journal quietly selects for the trades worth showing. A clean setup that worked gets a screenshot and a caption about the pattern. A messy entry taken out of frustration, or a stop that got moved twice before it hit, rarely gets the same treatment. Nobody annotates their worst decisions with the same enthusiasm as their best chart reads, which means a folder of screenshots slowly turns into a highlight reel rather than a record — and a highlight reel will always look like a better trader than the numbers say.

The same failure runs the other way with numbers-only logs, just differently: a spreadsheet with no context makes every losing trade look the same, whether it was a sound setup that didn't work out or a setup that should never have been taken. Without the visual record, it's easy to misdiagnose a losing streak as bad luck when the actual pattern is a specific setup type that keeps failing, and that pattern is often only visible on the chart.

Using both without doubling the work

The two records aren't substitutes for each other, but they don't need equal effort either. The numbers should be complete for every trade — entry, stop, size, exit — because that's the record accountability actually depends on, and it's the part that has to exist whether or not the trade felt notable. Screenshots are worth taking selectively, on the trades the numbers already flag as worth a second look: the ones that lost despite a sound setup, or the setup type that keeps showing up on the losing side of the ledger. Reviewing the chart for those specific trades tells you something a highlight-reel folder never will, because you're looking at the ones the numbers already said mattered.
